School board meets PDF Print E-mail

Taking care of loose ends seems to occupy most of the time at Fleming County School Board meeting during the summer.
Handbooks, surplus inventory and fund rasiers were all discussed at the meeting.
The employee benefit guidelines were read and Superintendet Tony Roth said, “It is standard.” It was motioned by John Hyatt, with a second by Jaime Collinsworth to approve these benefits.
Simons Middle School made a request to declare a combination oven as surplus. A combination oven is an oven that cooks with heat and steam.
“Something  happened with this oven back in the fall, and now they’re afraid to use it. They would like to purchase a new one and declare this one surplus to make that happen,” Roth said.
This meeting contained the second reading of policy update. “It’s mostly just cosmetic revisions, and stuff we have to do,” Roth said. This was motioned for approval by Hyatt with a second by Collinsworth.
The second reading of the discipline code and attendance policy was the next topic of discussion. “It’s the same little cosmetic typos we fixed,” Karen Kirby said. The handbook and codes within it were approved.
The Simons Middle School and Fleming County High School fees and activity funds was the next matter of discussion for the board. Members of the board had a list regarding the amount of money each sport and activity receives for the year.
“The general rule for a sport is to replace 10percent of the inventory every year so that you don’t get hit with a big bill.” After some discussion of how much money a sports team really needs, the board began to break down the cost it takes to put on an actual game. “We pay the umpires $110, a piece, per game,” Mike Ishmael said. “So, does the gate money go to the team also?” Hyatt asked. “Yes,” Roth said. After discussion the funds and activities were approved with a motion by Roy Gray and second by Collinsworth.
FFA requested a trip to the Kentucky State Fair and the Cross Country team requested a trip to Carter Caves. Both trips were approved after meeting  standard trip criteria.
“Many clubs and activities go ahead and fill out their fundraiser requests for the entire year, meaning they already have them planned we just have to approve them,” Roth said. Roth said that he has looked over the fundraiser reports and will continue to look them over as the time comes. “We don’t approve door-to-door sales,” Eddie Ward said.
The next item of business was to purchase new bleachers for the athletic department. “The bottom bleacher seats have frame damage and are very broken. It’s a liability option,” Roth said, “If you have 5 row bleachers, you have to have backs and sides. If we get new bleachers I would like to set and anchor a set behind and near the softball and baseball fields, put the old ones near the ag barn for when they have their show.”
Hyatt thought the board should split the purchases.
“We should get two new sets of bleachers right now, and do a little at a time. At least until we get the money back in here,” Hyatt said.
A compromise was made, and the board decided to “purchase two sets of bleachers and take balance left to purchase concrete to set the bleachers with,” Ward said.
Under the “Other” category this month Roth asked for permission from the Board to hold administrative retreat, for under $400 at Park Lake. The retreat is for Fleming County School employees and lasts two days. The approval of this was motioned by Hyatt, with a second from Collinsworth.
