An early morning fire destroyed a historic two-story home in Mt. Carmel. The fire started around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
According to fire Chief J.R. Denton the home of Felicia Meyer and her
two young children was engulfed in flames when the Mt. Carmel and the
Flemingsburg engines arrived on scene.
“Flames were already showing through the roof at the rear of the house when we arrived,” Denton said. The crew stayed on scene until around 8:30 a.m. to ensure that all embers were completely distinguished since the structure was situated between other homes in the area, according to Denton. Meyer and her children were asleep when the fire broke out but escaped the burning home without injury. Meyer said she gives total credit to God that she and her children were able to get out of the burning building safe and sound. “I have never been so scared in all of my life,” Meyer said. “I know that God was watching over me and my kids. I normally don’t wake up at such an early hour but on this day I did. When I woke up I realized that our home was on fire.” Meyer also said that she has always had her children sleep in the same room with her especially during those cold winter months. “I guess I am one of “mother hen” types that feels like her babies need to be close by at all times. And I am so grateful that they were close enough to reach and get them when I saw the flames,” she said. Although the family lost everything they owned in the fire Meyer noted that she was able to salvage a few photographs of her children and a framed footprint. Meyer said she is grateful and thankful for all the community has done to reach out with offers of help. “The community has really come together to help my family during our time of need,” Meyer said. “The Fleming County School has gone above and beyond and I am extremely grateful for their help.” According to Denton the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
