The roar of tractors filled downtown Flemingsburg Friday morning as the annual FFA tractor parade got underway.
The cold didn’t hinder the procession as 81 tractors left Stockyards and headed for Fleming County High School with Principal Jinny Hurdle leading the way.
Small, big, old, new, red, green and blue, the tractors attracted a sizable group of viewers. Parked across from Simons Middle School Elmo McCord and his wife Patty, waited for their grandson, Justin, to come chugging by.
Other students participated in the parade, which is in its fourth year. Senior Ryan Lamkin has been there every year. And the excitment never diminishes.
“I have really enjoyed the tractor parade during the four years I have participated,” Lamkin said.
Agriculture is still big business in Fleming County. For many of the students, the parade gives them the opportunity to re-enforce the importance of agiculture.
“It’s a great way to show students and the community that there is still a passion for agriculture and there is fun in it too,” Heath Mineer, senior.
For many others, the parade is just fun.
“It’s awesome and a memory I will never forget”, Jerrod Kabler, senior
Justin Harris drove in the parade for the first time this year. The experience is one he won’t soon forget.
“This was the first year that I have been in the tractor parade and I had a lot of fun,” Harris said.
One parent, Peggy Lewis, was thrilled to see the support of the community.
“It is awesome and so cool to see everyone come out in support FFA, even in the cold,” she said.
Getting kids involved in the parade was a selling point for parent Jeff Vice.
For Evaline Fairchild and husband, Lynn, from Waynesville, Ohio, the parade is an opporitunity to come back to Flemingsburg. The couple came to the parade last year and enjoyed it so much they came back this year.
“My husband and I both love to come see all the tractors in the parade,” Evaline Fairchild said. “Last year we had a tractor in the parade but this year there was talk of snow so we didn’t bring our tractor, but Lynn does have a little John Deere tractor on the hood of his truck.”
