Fleming County High School Academic Team is headed to state competition.
The team won the regional title recently and is working toward bringing home the state championship. For the seniors on the team the challenge is intense.
“We have won five out of the last six years,” said Seth Colgan.
Stephen Heflin said they had not been beaten by any team in the area, something that makes them all proud. Although they have come out the winner, their sponsor Kent Grannis said the games were close.
“Last year it was one point games,” Grannis said. “This year the closest anyone got to us was eight points.”
Quick Recall, where students are read questions and buzz in to give the answer, is still the favorite of most team members. Heflin prefers the written test. He is very good at social studies and has won in that category several times.
Most admit they are not nervous when it comes time to sit with their hand on the buzzer.
"It’s the buzzer zone,” said Ryan Schwartz. “When you are in the buzzer zone you don’t see anybody.”
The students practice with the Big Book of Knowledge, a book Grannis has compiled with various trivia and facts.
Seth Colgan said some of the knowledge might be useless, but nevertheless they know it.
“I know that Diane Arbust took a picture of boy with a hand grenade,” Colgan said. “The picture was taken in Central Park in the 1950s.”
Schwartz knows Japanese and Chinese mythology. He likes the written test where he is given 50 minutes to answer 50 questions.
Along with team mates Nate Dillon and Jessime Kirk, the FCHS Academic Team is ready to take on the competition at the state tournament held March 13-15 in Louisville.
