By Danetta Barker Editor Fleming County High School Principal Jinny Hurdle has announced a new football coach. Bill Spencer has been named the new varsity football coach for the 2010-11 school year. Spencer is currently the defensive coordinator for the Panthers. He will take the reins of the team beginning with the spring football season. Hurdle said she was excited that Spencer made the decision to move into the top job. “We’re very proud that Coach Spencer has agreed to lead our football program,” Hurdle said. “He has served more than 11 years at FCHS and is dedicated to our program and our students. I’m excited to embark on this new tradition for Panther Football.” Spencer has coached at Fleming County High School since the 1991 season. He began as an assistant coach and was named defensive coordinator in 2003. At FCHS he has sponsored Pep Club, served on the principal’s leadership tea, the district leadership team, the SACS committee and the RTI team. Spencer served with head coaches Tony Roth and Gene Peterson. He knows the job of head coach is challenging and a great opportunity. “I am truly honored to have the opportunity to lead the prestigious program. I look forward to many challenges in the months ahead. I want to build on our past successes, but more importantly I want to forge new ground and lead the team to the next level,” Spencer said. Athletic Director Blake Price is excited to have Spencer leading the Panthers. “Coach Spencer brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm for the student athletes of Fleming County, and we are very glad to have him on board,” Price said. In addition to leading the Panthers, Spencer will also oversee the little league football program and will assist with the middle school football, helping the transition to high school sports. A native of Carter County, Coach Spencer earned his undergraduate degree in physical education and health and his master’s degree in educational leadership at Morehead State University. While at MSU he played football as an offensive lineman for two seasons. “I can’t express the pride I feel in being able to lead and serve our young men,” Spencer said. “I am blessed to be part of our great community and our school.” After the introduction Friday, Spencer spoke to his team. “We will start with hard work and we will begin in the weight room Monday,” he told the team. Jesse Bacon will move up to defensive coach and Jared Wagner will join Corbin Marshall as assistant coaches. In closing his talk to the team Spencer said he was proud to serve them. “I want you to know how proud I am to continue to serve you,” he said. |
