From Shop Class to Community Service
Building small houses for charity gives students a big opportunity to give back to the community.
The Fleming County FFA is once again underway with this year’s CASA for CASA project.  Each year A.W. Graham Lumber and the Fleming County FFA team up to design, build, and donate a playhouse for the Court Appointed Special Advocates.   Woody Graham, owner of A. W. Graham Lumber, generously sponsors the materials allowing the students at FCHS to learn the various skills required to build a house, according to teacher Bobby Pease.
“Each year the students pick the theme of the CASA house.  In the past they have built an old west saloon, a log cabin, and doll houses.  This year’s theme was inspired by the many students interested in hunting,” Pease said. “Once the boys in the shop heard that Woody was selling Mossy Oak vinyl siding they were hooked.
The project snowballed. Student Tyler Newsom brought in log cabin magazines from home to help design and decorate the house.  Relying heavily on the experience of Jacob Arnold, Estill Hamilton, and Ryan Lamkin the house was framed up in two class periods.  Next the sheeting, siding, and tin roof were all installed.  Barn siding was used to trim out the porch, eaves, and inside of the playhouse thanks to Daniel Jackson, according to Pease.  Inside, the class put up drywall, stomped the ceiling, hung cedar beams, laid hard wood flooring, and even laid a tile entry way.
“The tile floor was done exclusively by Newsom who artistically took on the responsibility of laying out a mosaic of an 8 point buck in the floor,” Pease said.
Shae Henderson and Andrew Earlywine worked with antlers for some final touches in decorating the hunting cabin.
“They made this chandelier from antlers,” Pease said. “Daniel Jackson made a wall mount of antlers using the European mount.”
The antlers are mounted on a piece of barn wood cut in the shape of Fleming County.
The class got stuck only once, when they needed a small sky light. Another businessman came to the rescue. Jerry Eubanks of Bald Hill Truss donated a small piece of clear sky light material to the project, Pease said.
The hunting cabin has been so much fun to build, Pease and students said.
“Many of the students didn’t even realize that learning was taking place.  From the beginning when we spent an entire class period figuring the bill of materials to the framing, rafter layout, sheeting, siding, roofing, and finishing the inside, the students have learned a great deal of knowledge and skill that will be utilized down the road.,” Pease said.
The 20 boys in the Agriculture Structure and Design class would like to thank Woody for his support in this project.  On top of his charitable donation to the CASA program he has helped shape the learning and skill of all of the students involved with the building of this year’s CASA house.  Please support the Casa for CASA program by purchasing your chance on this year’s playhouse.  For more information on purchasing a ticket please contact Bobby Pease at 606.776.5120.
