Love, The Bible, And God
The Bible speaks strongly about love. God’s love is the warp and woof of the Bible. It affirms to us that God IS love. (I John 4:16)
Love is also the hallmark of the Christian life, as we read in I Corinthians 13. Do not doubt it: Christianity is a faith that is about love. God’s love is manifested toward us in Jesus Christ. Our love is then manifested toward others because of what God has done for us.
How well do we really understand this today? Have we lost the way? Do we really know what Christian love is? There are many indications that as our society becomes less and less Christian, and more and more secular, it becomes less and less loving. The news headlines on any given day seem to provide all the evidence necessary to document this.
A long time ago, Anglican minister F.W. Robertson explained love like this: he said that love consisted of the desire to give, and the desire to bless. When we love others, we are always looking for new ways to give them more of our selves, more of our time, more of our affection. Love is about being devoted to someone’s welfare and good.
The Cross of Jesus Christ is God’s defining demonstration of love—and it reveals to us His devotion to our welfare and spiritual good. As Simon Peter explained in the Bible: “[Jesus] bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”( I Peter 2:24)
