The Parson’s Perspective Christopher Beckham
“God Is In Control”
God is in control of our world. Do you believe that fact? Sometimes people see the events of their lives as random chance, or just a combination of circumstances. There are many people who believe that the existence of man is nothing more than a biological event—that we evolved up from the amoeba and now walk upright. What about it? Are we here by accident? Is God off in some distant heaven unaware of our sorrows, unaware of our pain? Did He just wind the earth up, sort of like one would wind up an alarm clock, and then walk away, and leave us all to our own devices? Did God create us only to say, “there you go, you have life, now, ‘sink or swim,’ and I’m moving on to other things now.” No. This is not the case, according to the Scriptures. The Scriptures tell us that God is in control of this world, and that it is all operating according to His plan and design. ‘In him we live and move and have our being’—that is what Acts 17:28 tells us. God is in control. That is what the doctrine of God’s providence tells us. The Psalmist reflected on this in Psalm 139. There, David wrote, “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.” These are truly words to live by. God knows you and cares about you.
