The search for a superintendent for Fleming County Schools has seen
several disruptions. However board members expect a superintendent to
be named by March.
According to Board Chair Eddie Ward, the search came at a time when most people were hired for the year.
“When Kelley (Crain) resigned in August, and this was no fault of
Kelley’s, most jobs had been filled,” Ward said. “The job had to be
posted for 30 days and by the time we had applicants Thanksgiving and
Christmas were here.”
The search began with Crain’s resignation to take a job with Fayette
County schools. Immediate steps were taken to fill Crain’s job,
including appointing a screening committee.
“The screening committee is made up of one principal, two teachers, one classified employee, one parent and one board member,” said board member Jamie Collinsworth. “I serve on the screening committee. We screened roughly 15 applicants.” That process included meeting with each applicant, according to Collinsworth. Applicant came from across the county and state. “The screening committee did a great job, they did their homework,” Collinsworth said. The screening committee sent recommendations to the board. “After they forwarded those applicants, we screened them and we had the option of adding anyone that was not included in the screening committee’s recommendations,” Ward said. By the time names were given to the board the Christmas break had come. However since the holidays are over, interviewing is currently being conducted, according to Ward. After the board does interviews, the background checks will be made on the applicants that will be considered for the job. “We are hoping to make a decision by the first of March,” Ward said. Currently Tony Roth is serving as interim superintendent. He has held that position since August. Ward said that Roth was appointed to a six-month term as interim superintendent. If there is no one hired by the end of that six months the board can appoint Roth for up to two months, according to Ward.
