Defining “Miracle”

If you looked up the word “miracle” in the dictionary, you would find that it is said to be something very unusual, a thing to behold, something from the supernatural. How would you define it? Sometimes we speak of the “miracle of birth.” Or we hope and pray for a “miracle cure.”
Our ideas as to what constitutes a miracle could be very diverse, but I consider the fact that I have been converted by God’s grace a miracle. If you have experienced conversion to Christianity, do you consider it a miracle?
You see, I find it amazing that God would love us, rebels, transgressors, and breakers of His law that we are. We have offended Him, every one of us, in that He gave us a wonderful law that was for our own good, and for our blessing, and to a person, we have all fallen short of keeping it perfectly. We have offended against God in thought, word and deed. It is our fault, too; it is “our own most grievous fault,” as we sometimes pray.
Yet, despite the anger and hostility against God on our part, which the Bible speaks of in Colossians 1 and other places, God is lovingly disposed toward us, and makes a way for us to be forgiven, pardoned, and cleansed. He is willing to forgive us and give us a new and better heart, through Jesus Christ. We can go from being God’s sworn enemy to being His friend. What a wonderful truth for the New Year—or any other time.
