Thanksgiving Day was always one of my favorites. When I was growing up in Western Kentucky, there were two distinct things I remember concerning Thanksgiving Day. I always checked out a big stack of books at the school library on Wednesday. I started reading them as soon as I got home, reading late into the night, for as long as I could keep my eyes open. Thursday morning was reserved for going hunting with dad and my brother; then the big meal in late afternoon. On Friday, I read at my grandmother’s house most of the day. Those were happy times. Thanksgiving Day is still a favorite, though there is less time for reading, and I’ve given up hunting. There is still a big meal, and I revel in the culinary prowess of my wife—turkey and dressing are two of her specialties. The meal is hardly the highlight of the day, though. Watching our two small children grow, play and learn is. I am so thankful to God for those two special little people. The Bible urges us to be thankful. The Psalmist wrote “be thankful unto him, and bless His name, for the Lord is good.” (Psalm 100:4) Our personal happiness is directly proportional to our personal thankfulness. The most thankful people are usually the happiest ones. They make every day a little Thanksgiving Day. A lifestyle of thankfulness is an ornament to the Christian life.
