“The Few the Proud” Luke 10:1-20
Jesus said it plainly that there is a call to live into the service of God! But it requires a commitment! We read in Luke chapter 10 verse 2 that Jesus told them: “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” Many heard Jesus speak, but few dared to follow. Many may have claimed to believe but, their own wants, personal agendas, desires and lack of willingness to change kept them from following. In Chapter 9 that proceeds today’s text: Jesus tells several people about the act of following him: Jesus answers one request to go bury his father first: Jesus says “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:60) Another person wanted to go say goodbye to their family but Jesus said: “No one who puts their hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62) Few were willing to work for the harvest, which God had in mind. “The Harvest is plentiful, but the workers were few.” Having grown up and worked in the low-country of South Carolina I had the opportunity to spend time at the Marine bases in Beaufort, SC. I had the chance to talk to young people who would come into training knowing that it would be hard, knowing they must change, but believing in a “greater good” and the cause of their country. The Marine motto is Semper Fidelis and is Latin for “Always Faithful” and is often shortened to Semper Fi. And they train to be always faithful to the cause, and there by becoming the Few the Proud, the Marines… Those that answered Christ’s call was also few and that is the bad news! The bad news is also the good news. Some did listen. 70 people were willing to hear the good news of the Kingdom. 70 were willing to obey. 70 were willing to go into the fields of the Kingdom and bring forth a harvest. 70…A few had heard the call and knew they were becoming part of something special! These 70 have the power of Christ to heal, Evangelize, and cast out demons that the Kingdom Of God may be established here on Earth. Take a look at what Jesus says to the 70 when they return successful from their mission. “Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven!” We should rejoice that we have the opportunity to submit and follow the call of Christ! The Kingdom of God is here in the presence of Christ and power of the Holy Spirit. The forces of darkness submit to Jesus’ name. Our names are written in heaven because Jesus is with us. This is something to celebrate. This is also a message that cannot remain hidden as it is before us! We must work to build this world in the likeness of Heaven. Luke 10:1-2 reads: “After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (NRSV) Who among us is willing to work for the kingdom? Are we willing to Live Semper Fi (always being faithful) and become more than the “Few and The Proud” but, messengers of God?
Let us pray: Lord Jesus Christ, we want to be disciples, not just another complacent follower or an obstacle to others. Holy Spirit, lead someone to each of us this week that we might share our faith. Lord, overcome our resistance and fear and teach us what to say. Amen. ...Doug Craven
