“Standing On Our Own Foundation”
Ezekiel 18:1-4
“The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.” NIV Ezekiel 18:2b-3

Yes there was a time in Israel when the people believed that children suffered for the sins of their parents.  They based this on the understanding of the Mosaic Law as describing the generations being punished for the previous generations written in Exodus 20:5.  But, here Ezekiel declares this proverb of understanding to be false.  It is to be understood that all people will be held accountable for their own actions.  As we are not bound to our parents for our justification and salvation, neither do their sins condemn us.  So each person will stand alone in regard to the accountability of what they have done and not done.

This seems to be a hard understanding in today’s world where people often turn to blaming others for the circumstances of their lives.  Many people today do blame their parents or family for the problems they bear.  Or we say that since they failed at some component of life then we are also bound to follow in their footsteps.  Now this is not to say that parents and others do not sometimes inflict us with circumstances that are unjust or painful.  But, it is our decision how we respond and make the choice to stand on the foundation we have created in our own lives.

O’ Lord we are thankful that we are not bound by the sins of our parents, friends and family.  Thank you for allowing us the burden to stand or fall on our own.  Amen.
