“Make Me Number One” Mark 10:41-45 “And whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all” Mark 10:44 NIV
Often in our lives we seek to be number “one” at whatever we are engaged in or undertaking. In modern American society it often seems that is what we are called to do. We are told from an early age that we should be the best in the sports we chose, the careers we are involved in, etc. And by being the “best” we see people recognized in the media, in communities and often financially.
In our text today, we are reading the follow-up to the request by James and John the sons of Zebedee; to become the persons seated at the right and left hand of Christ when he establishes His kingdom. But, Jesus responds that they really don’t know what they are asking for either in what the request entailed nor did they understand that Jesus was not about to establish an Earthly kingdom.
Then Jesus takes it to the next level as he explains that it is those who are freely willing to serve others that will see themselves lifted up in the kingdom to come.
Most organizations, institutions and businesses measure success by the individual’s level of achievement. But in Christ’s kingdom the way to get ahead is to serve.
Prayer: Lord God help us learn that in order to embrace the way of the Lord is to give of ourselves in serving others. Amen.
