“History Repeats Itself” Mark 13:1-8 “As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” Mark 13:1-2 NIV
Just as Jeremiah prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem over 500 years before Christ, Jesus foretold that it would happen again. As the Babylonians leveled the city to the very foundations so did the Romans. In the first destruction Israel had turned away from God, in the second the people had turned away from the Son of God and condemned him.
Historians tell us that unless we learn from our mistakes that history repeats itself. In our relationship with God as within our own lives it is often our own failings that bring about our painful consequences. If we turn from God, and God will allow the consequences to play themselves out and yet, will always be there to take us back and to love us. It might sound like a never ending cycle, except that we can learn and because of that we can have hope. For in God’s eternal love there is always hope. Let us look to our future then not as a never ending cycle but as the ability to always be able to come home and be loved.
Prayer: Thank you God for always loving us even when we run astray. Amen. ...Doug Craven
