“Just keep it Simple” I Corinthians 2:1-13
“When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom.” 1 Corinthians 2:1 NRSV
We just experienced Easter and lots of worship services and readings, meditations and reflections. We may be reeling trying to sort out what had the most importance and what was the most accurate way to relate to the experience. Hearing the word from different people can help us grow, but we must sort out the core message. After Paul had established the church in Corinth, he left to go to other principalities and townships through out the Roman Empire. However, Paul was diligent about keeping up with what was going on with the other churches he had established. Paul found out that after leaving Corinth others had come in preaching as well and theirs was a complicated for of the Gospel Because it was harder to understand than the message that Paul preached many assumed that that these new “preachers” were smarter than Paul and their message must be the right one. Paul writes to the church in Corinth that it is not how complicated the message is that determines the truth. The message that underscored Christ’s life, his teaching and the meaning of his death and resurrection are quite simple in Paul’s eyes. Paul’s message focused on the fact that Christ lived, taught, ministered, and then died on the cross , so that all that believed in him as the Son of God would be saved. It can sound rather simple, but this is the essence of the truth Paul taught. Paul would later come to say: “We have been saved by Grace , though faith, and not by our good works, lest anyone should boast.” It is not the complicated analysis that yields the foundation for our hope. It simply believes in the gift given to us in Jesus Christ. The gift that Jesus gives us in his death and resurrection is reconciliation to God the creator and the gift of lift everlasting. That is simple and special, or as Paul says in verse 9, “ what no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor human heart conceived , what God has prepared for those who love him.” That is special. Prayer Loving God, we thank you for Jesus Christ who’s resurrection we have celebrated and who lo0ved us enough to give us hope eternal. ...Doug Craven
