Students at E.P. Ward Elementary are sending sweet dreams to soldiers serving their country in far away places.
The idea came from the book “The Dream Box, Big Dreams for Little
Sleepers” by Teresa J. Doyle. The book was written to help Doyle’s sons
deal with divorce, according to teacher Tammy Merritt.
In the book the children are given dreams written on slips of paper
that tell good stories which are supposed to help the children have
sweet dreams. Doyle wanted to do something for troops so she adapted
the dream idea for older people.
Merritt said Doyle wrote out 30 dreams on slips of paper, tied the
scrolls with a ribbon and packaged it in plastic bags. The students in
Merritt’s kindergarten class, along with Melanie Thompson’s class drew
their portrait on cards that have information about the school on the
back. Each child will send a bag of dreams to a soldier. The students
worked on the project just in time for Veterans Day. The notes will be
shipped to Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We want our soldiers to have good nights,” Merritt told the classes.
They drew the pictures, placed the card in the bags and were happy to know that their messages will get to a soldier. Caleb Fannin drew his picture of a boy wearing an orange shirt and wrote his name across the card. The school’s address was written on the back in case soldiers want to respond. Merritt said Doyle’s book will soon be released and she will make an appearance at Ward. |
